How to Make a Collage Masterboard Paper Storage Journal

What is a collage masterboard paper storage journal? Check it out.

I’m working on crafting a Junk Art Journal using the Secret Diary scrapbook paper by Stamperia, my favorite paper craft provider.

The journal features a range of paper types suitable for mixed-media and collage journaling, as well as pockets, tags, and embellishments to enhance the look of the layouts.

I’ve included a homemade postcard made with acrylic paint, and thin cream cardstock paper, as well as mulberry paper, tickets, stamps, and more.

I also want to include a Collage Masterboard Paper Storage Journal to hold music sheets, book pages, maps, paper bags, and magazine pages—a bonus journal for the artist to make collages.

Step One: Make a Collage Masterboard

The first step is to make a collage masterboard to use for a journal cover.

I chose handwriting script and various nature-themed papers to collage onto thin, cream-colored 12×12 cardstock paper. Notice the beautiful flowers and pretty butterflies on the front cover.

Once the collage masterboard is finished and the glue is completely dry, I added a coat of clear Gel Medium to seal the cover to prevent the paper from cracking when bent. I made sure to let it dry for a few days before cutting it down to size and making the journal.

I decided to make a 6″ wide and 8″ tall journal, so the masterboard was cut 8″ tall and 12″ wide on a paper cutter. The next step was to score the 12″ wide at 6″ to fold the journal in half.

Once it was scored, a bone folder was used to press down along the fold, and a strip of vintage-style tape was applied along the spine for extra protection. The corners were rounded to enhance the look.

Step Two: Decorate the Inside Cover

I decorated the inside cover, front and back, with a brown paper bag and a book page, inked and stamped with designs of leaves, flowers, and butterflies.

I used Art Glitter Glue to cover the inside so the brown paper bag would stick to the front and back cover. After it dried, another application of glue was applied to hold down the decorated book page.

Step Three: Paper for Collage Masterboard Journal

I want to include music sheets, book pages, maps, paper bags, and magazine pages in the Collage Masterboard Journal.

I gathered various papers, roughly twelve total, which, when folded, will equal twenty-four pages for the journal.

I ripped them down to slightly smaller than the size of the journal, 6″ wide and 8″ tall, to fit inside. Making some smaller and some larger than others to add contrast.

I secured the pages inside the journal with yellow twine. This allows the pages to be taken out for collage, and others to be added for future use, hence the name Collage Masterboard Paper Storage Journal.

The journal is held closed with a small bulldog clip along the side. I added a dangle to the clip to enhance the journal’s appearance. Now the Artist has a bonus journal with extra pages to make collages.
